One of Muskoka’s most beautiful lookouts
Huckleberry Rock has been well known locally for over 100 years as a scenic lookout – and the lookout trail is one of the best places to catch a sunset in all of Muskoka.
If you are looking for an exceptional nature experience, plan a sunset hike to the lookout to take in this breathtaking view … you won’t be disappointed!
The Hiking Trail
Click here for directions to the trail head, located on Milford Bay Rd. There is free parking on-site.
To get to the Lookout, you will have to walk roughly 1km, mostly uphill from the parking lot. This can be a somewhat challenging hike, but there are park benches along the way to rest. Don’t be a hero! if you need a rest, take a seat and catch your breath.
Once you get up the first steep slope, you will come into a large opening of pink granite rock. This granite rock formation looks absolutely stunning in the golden hour. This large clearing is often mistook for as ‘The Lookout’ because there is a beautiful view of the lake, but in order to get to the ‘Real Lookout’, you will need to continue heading south-east for another 5 minutes or so. You will pass through a few patches of brush and trees before emerging into a wide open clearing with an unobstructed view of the lake and a large rock perch. You will know you’ve reached the right place because there is a plaque on the actual lookout rock to let you know you have arrived at your destination.
Remember to follow the white markers on rocks and trees. The full hiking trail is actually quite neat as well, with a portion of the trail passing by the Huckleberry Rock Cut (a marvel in its own regard).

When to Visit
If it looks like you are going to have a clear night, plan to go during the golden hour and stay for the sunset. You might want to pack some flashlights in case you plan on making the walk back to the parking lot at dusk.
The trail is a popular place, so if you want to go when it is least busy plan for an evening Sunday to Thursday. Weekends, the traffic increases considerably.
When the fall season hits, it becomes a popular leaf peeping destination (and with good reason). If you want to stay clear of the crowds, then definitely plan a Sunday – Thursday excursion.
