Chasing Waterfalls in Muskoka

We suggest you do go chasing waterfalls and Muskoka is the perfect place to do it. Go on a self-guided waterfall tour across Muskoka to experience the regions rugged trails, waterfalls and shores.

Although it is a fun way to spend an afternoon, getting great pictures and great recreation, it is important to note the danger that exists near waterfalls. Always be attentive and careful near waterfalls, as rocks can be slippery.

Here are some must-see waterfalls to check out in Muskoka:

Bala Falls


Bala
Located in the heart of charming Bala, the Bala Falls is a great spot to stop and enjoy a picnic with the family with an incredible backdrop. While there, hop on the Bala Historic Walk, a self-guided 4.5 KM walk through many historical sites. Learn more

Minnehaha Falls

This hidden gem of a waterfall is a bit difficult to find, but once you find the trail it’s worth the trek! Be prepared to hike on loose soil, steep slopes and some slippery rock. Not recommended for families with small children or individuals with mobility difficulties for safety concerns. Always remember waterfalls are not waterparks, especially with the more advanced hikes! Learn more

Ragged Falls


Hwy 60 Near Algonquin Park 
Named one of the 10 best waterfalls in Ontario, this waterfall on Oxtongue River is a must-see. There is roughly a 1km hike to this beautiful cascade from a parking area, and a provincial park pass is required to access it. Learn more

Oxtongue Rapids

This amazing destination on the Oxtongue River is believed to be the inspiration for The Red Maple, one of A.Y. Jackson’s (member of the Group of Seven) most celebrated paintings. However, please use caution, this trail follows the shore of a fast-moving river with rocky slopes to the river’s edge. At times the trail will follow the road itself as it comes quite close to the river. Trail length is about 1 km or 1250 steps one way. Learn more

Hatchery Falls

Take a 20-minute hike along a well-marked trail with a beautiful waterfall waiting for you at the finish line, Hatchery Falls. Park at the closed Skeleton Lake Fish Hatchery on Fish Hatchery Rd (small group of buildings) and follow the trail across the open field to the woods. Learn more

Bracebridge Falls

Explore one of the trademark sights of the community at the Bracebridge Falls. Located right downtown, the Silver Bridge and Bracebridge Falls is an iconic scene. It empties the water of the North Branch of the Muskoka River down into Bracebridge Bay. Wilson’s Falls

Wilson’s Falls is the wildest and most scenic falls on the North Branch of Muskoka River. Located just to the north of the Downtown area off of River Road, Wilson’s Falls has a great walking trail which provides a spectacular view of the falls. A picnic area is also available. Learn more

Muskoka Falls

This brilliant waterfall is carved into a large gorge at Muskoka Falls, showing the eroding power of the falls over thousands of years. Walk across the street to a sandy beach for a scenic view of the lake drifting into the falls. Learn more

Stubb’s Falls


Huntsville
At Stubb’s Falls, the Little East River rushes down a rock chute. Stop here for a pleasant 2.6 KM hike and is good for all skill levels, best used between May to October. Learn more

High Falls and Little High Falls

There are five waterfalls located at the High Falls site. These include Pott’s Falls, Muskoka Canyon Falls, Little High Falls, Big High Falls and a 5th man-made falls to accommodate the High Falls Water Park. Much of this site is wheelchair accessible. It is situated on the Trans-Canada Trail System, High Falls is an ideal spot to stop and enjoy the view. Learn more
